July 2020 Reads

We created a list of the books we plan to read in July. Let us know if you plan on reading any of them. We can’t wait to start these amazing new books! Tell us what you plan to read in July. We’re always looking for recommendations.

1. A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi

Amazon.com: A Very Large Expanse of Sea eBook: Mafi, Tahereh ...

This book, about a 16-year old Muslim girl navigating life post-9/11, has been on our to-read list for a while! Mafi is one of Claire’s favorite authors, and we can’t wait to read this book. Exciting news readers: we have partnered with Bards Alley, our local bookstore in Vienna, VA , for a virtual YA book club on Monday, July 20 at 7 pm! We will be discussing this book. We hope to see you there 🙂

2. Majesty (American Royals #2) by Katharine McGee

Amazon.com: American Royals II: Majesty eBook: McGee, Katharine ...

We were fortunate to receive an arc of this book (we literally did a happy dance!) from the publisher. If you’re a long-time reader of our blog, then you know that we *loved* the first book in this series, American Royals. The series is an alternate history, where instead of George Washington becoming president, he is crowned King after America won the Revolutionary War. Majesty is slated to pick up right where we left off with America’s favorite royals— and we cannot wait to read!

3. The Damned (The Beautiful #2) by Renée Ahdieh

Amazon.com: The Damned (The Beautiful Book 2) eBook: Ahdieh, Renée ...

The Damned is the second installment in Ahdieh’s series about a girl who becomes entangled with New Orleans’ infamous La Cour des Lions, a group that is not quite as human as they appear. We read the first book in this series last year for a October 2019 book club pick and literally could not wait for the second book to release. Luckily, there was a pretty short turn-around, and this book will be released on July 7! You can check out our review of The Beautiful here

4. The Silence of Bones by June Hur

Amazon.com: The Silence of Bones (9781250229557): June Hur: Books

Okay, so we are totally sucked in by the premise of this book and have been dying to read it for a while. The book is set in the year 1800 in Joseon (Korea) and follows a sixteen-year old girl named Seol, who is living out an ancient curse while indentured to the police bureau. When a noblewoman is murdered, she is recruited to assist a young inspector with solving the case. We love a good mystery and cannot pass up this story!

5. My Calamity Jane (The Lady Janies #3) by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows

Amazon.com: My Calamity Jane (9780062652812): Hand, Cynthia ...

We have been big fans of this series for a while. Each book is a spin on the lives of famous women named Jane. The first was Lady Jane Grey; the second was Jane Eyre; and the third is now Calamity Jane. If you love humor and history— this series is definitely for you. Fun fact: we met the authors at our local Barnes and Noble about three years ago and they are wonderful women! We’ve supported them ever since. The third book was released on June 2nd!

  3. I have a lot of plans for the month of July, and not a lot of time to read. But, “The Very Large Expanse of Sea” and “The Lady Janie” series look too irresistible to pass up. I am sure I can find time for a little bit of reading, if I really tried! LOL

    1. Great post!! Such a varied Tbr. I’m planning on taking part in a readathon based around rainbow colours in July so I can hopefully get through lots of my books on my general TBR. I’m excited to read normal people and Eleanor oliphant!!

  4. Looks like you have an exciting July ahead of you! I kept seeing American Royals pop up on my Goodreads, but I never actually read the description until now—and I’m kicking myself. It sounds amazing. I’ve also been avoiding picking up The Beautiful (even though I love Ahdieh) due to the meh reviews. I’ll definitely have to give it a chance now… (btw, I just finished My Calamity Jane, and I really enjoyed it. That whole series is so fun.) Happy reading!

  6. First, I didn’t know Tahereh Mafi had a new book so def going to have to check that out. And second, I read Majesty recently as well since I was such a big fan of the first. Definitely anticipating the third now!

  7. Wow, ”The Damned” I would choose not only because of the interesting story, but also because of that book cover! ♥ It’s made so beautiful, romantic and mystic!
