City of Bones is the first book in Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series. It was also her first published book and the introduction to the shadowhunter world. Clare is now one of the best known YA authors!
Christy and Clare first read this series years ago. We cannot remember the exact year, but it has been a while since we were introduced to this urban fantasy series.
Clary Fray’s life was normal. She lived in Brooklyn with her mom and spent most of time with her best friend Simon Lewis. One night Clary and Simon go to an all ages night at the Pandemonium club. Suddenly, Clary sees three teenagers dressed in black with strange markings all over their bodies. She follows them and sees them try to kill someone. Only, nobody else can see them.
The tall blonde guy, Jace, seemed surprised that Clary could see him and informed her that the guy he’s trying to kill is really a demon.
Ruby Red is the first installment in the three-book Ruby Red series by German author, Kerstin Gier. The series was such a success in Germany that it was immediately translated to English, becoming an international hit in the mid-2000’s. Fun fact: there was also a German movie adaption! We’ve been meaning to get our hands on it (with English dubbing or subtitles). If you’ve read the series or seen the movie, let us know down below.
Claire first read the series in high school circa 2013 and Christy read them around then too! We were immediately intrigued by the time travel concept. The series follows British teen, Gwyneth, who (unexpectedly) has the gene for time travel.
The first of a four book series, The Ivy focuses on Callie Andrew’s first semester at Harvard. Lauren Kunze, with her friend Rina Onur, started this series while students at Harvard. They refuse to admit how much of the plot actually happened 😉
We are so excited to introduce a new series on the blog called Then and Now! For this series, we will re-read our old favorites to see if they still live up to our expectations. Every review will include a blurb on our recollections from when we first read the book as well as our reactions now after re-reading. We can’t wait to revisit our old favorites to see if they live up to the hype!
